Basic Walking Patient Education Plan for a Healthy Lifestyle
Introducing patients to a daily lifestyle of fitness that will help build strength and improve health.
What is the Basic Walking Plan?
The Basic Walking Plan is a six-week program for beginner walkers who want to improve their overall health and increase their energy. The goal is to introduce your patients to a daily lifestyle of fitness and health that will help them get stronger and healthier in just six weeks. By the end of the plan, they’ll be walking more than 30 minutes a day.
The plan starts with 10 minute walks and gradually works up to 30-plus minutes. Health experts have found that about 30 minutes a day of regular moderate exercise is effective for improving health and reducing the risk of many diseases.
What Are the Benefits of Walking?
Walking is a great and simple way to get in aerobic activity, increase endurance, and improve heart health all while burning calories. Exercise doesn’t always need to be complicated or vigorous; regularly taking walks can do the trick.
Regularly walking can also help your patients to maintain a healthy weight and lose body fat, prevent or manage various conditions including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer, and type 2 diabetes, improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones and muscles, improve muscle endurance, increase energy levels, along with many other noticeable benefits. The benefits are even greater once your patients start to walk faster, farther, and more frequently.
The Basic Walking Plan will start with an information day that will educate your patients a little more in-depth on these benefits of walking and how to keep safety in mind throughout the six weeks.
What’s Inside the Plan?
Guiding your patients through an active new lifestyle can be difficult, and it can definitely be a chore to collect all of the needed information.
Fortunately, their program will provide them with their daily walk, tips, guidance, and tasks in order to help them transition to their Basic Walking Plan made specially for them. This way, they can maintain their walking schedule and healthy habits even after the six weeks are up.
Each day, their program will start with their daily walk. This includes the warm up, the walk, and the cool down. It will tell your patients how long the walk should be, but they can push themselves, slow down, or speed up as necessary. Here is an example:
These are intended to be guidelines for each walk; your patients can add time to their warm up, their walk, or their cool down if they please. Patients can see the length of their walk at the beginning of the day and plan accordingly based on their schedules.
Their daily walk is followed by a helpful tip of the day that they can follow throughout their everyday lives and will give them some advice that will make their walking journey a little bit easier. Here is an example:
Their tip of the day is then followed by their daily tasks and sometimes a video that will keep them educated and on a healthy and grounded schedule throughout the plan. Here is an example:
Each day provides this content for your patients and are a great help when it comes to easily adjusting to their new lifestyle.
